As we reflect on 2023, we are filled with gratitude. Southern Concrete Materials (SCM) owes our success to the incredible SCM team and our customers. This year allowed us to serve as partners on many notable commercial building projects across the WNC region. There is truly no job too large for us to take on.
Here are three remarkable and impactful projects our team executed this year.
Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino
Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino is currently the largest project in SCM’s West region. The $275 million expansion project is expected to be completed by late 2024 and will include a 25,000-square-foot gaming floor expansion, a new 296-room hotel tower, and a 1,700-space parking deck.
Because this is an extensive project for the geographical area, the SCM team works extremely hard each week to control raw material flow and maintain excellent quality control.
We are thrilled to see this project’s progression and are honored to help achieve Harrah’s vision.
Blue Ridge Commerce Center
The Blue Ridge Commerce Center in Flat Rock, NC, is an $80 million project, which includes four buildings and 654,216 square feet of Class A industrial/warehouse development on 65 acres. This property sits directly off of I-26 with great visibility and easy access to Asheville, NC, and Greenville, SC.
This project was demanding and required significant attention to detail. SCM’s crew faced the challenge and completed two of the four buildings in 2023, including:
- Slab on grade
- Tilt-up panels
- Concrete paving
We were proud to serve as a notable partner in this project and have enjoyed watching its progress every time we drive by on the highway.
I-26 Widening Project
Lastly, we worked alongside many dedicated individuals on the I-26 widening project. Since 2019, this has been a constant project for the SCM team. Every department of SCM has contributed in some fashion. On any given day, you will find us pouring concrete along the 22-mile road in Buncombe and Henderson counties.
As with all North Carolina Department of Transportation projects, the I-26 widening has affected countless drivers and passengers traveling in Western North Carolina. Heavy congestion and unpredictable traffic slow-downs have created congested daily commutes.
For the last four years, this project has been the talk of the town. However, we are close to the finish line. We hope to complete the Henderson County section in 2024 and the Buncombe County section in 2025.
Widening this interstate will provide safer and more efficient travel in the area. Additionally, it will improve overall roadway capacity to handle existing and future traffic volume.
