Fast, Reliable, Local: Southern Concrete Materials Portable Plant Supports Critical
I-40 Repairs

On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene caused widespread damage in Western North Carolina, resulting in massive flooding and numerous road closures. The storm triggered a landslide that caused a section of I-40 to collapse near the North Carolina-Tennessee state line.

Restoring this vital corridor quickly became a top priority, and Southern Concrete Materials (SCM) is playing a critical role in making it happen!

A Portable Solution for a Remote Challenge

To support this ongoing recovery effort, SCM has established a portable concrete plant in the I-40 Gorge Area of Haywood County. This strategic move ensures fast, reliable concrete deliveries while reducing long drive times and traffic delays from the main Waynesville plant, keeping daily pours on schedule and service to other regional customers uninterrupted.

With AMES Construction leading the NCDOT project, timely concrete delivery is critical. Stedman Smith, VP/Central Regional Manager, notes, “They’re going to want to pour concrete daily to meet their goal of completing the project in two years. AMES can rely on us for excellent service, our extensive NCDOT experience, and the proactive decision to build this dedicated plant to support their timeline.”

Even as SCM dedicates the portable facility to I-40 repairs, the Waynesville plant continues to serve residential, commercial, and municipal customers throughout the region. This approach ensures that the demands for the I-40 project do not affect day-to-day service for the communities SCM has supported for decades.
